A few of the fun things to do in Newport Beach:
* Hike or ride a bike along the Upper Newport Bay Reserve, catch a charter fishing boat, or go on whale watching excursions, or take a boat ride over to Catalina
* Swim or surf or swim in the California sunshine along the eight miles of beaches. Shop in one of the distinct “villages” or take a picnic lunch to one of the beautiful parks.
* Watch the sunset from Ocean Front Walk and then go for dinner at one of the outstanding restaurants nearby.

Local Sports News

  • Chris Taylor is another example of the Dodgers' fringe benefits

He is Babe Ruth. Well, not really, but he wears Babe Ruth’s number.

He is Andre the Giant. OK, not exactly, but he is a former Virginia Beach city middle school wrestling champion.

Some folks call him CT3, but Los Angeles already has a CP3, so that doesn’t work either.

    For now, let’s just settle...

  • Brandon McCarthy, Chase Utley deliver in Dodgers' 5-0 victory over the Cubs

The Chicago Cubs seemed to wake from a season-long slumber before arriving in Los Angeles, slugging 26 homers in their previous 14 games — nine of them wins — and beginning to resemble the 103-win steamroller that ended a 108-year World Series drought last season.

Then they ran into a wood chipper...

  • Top of the order is in fine form during Angels' 5-2 victory over the Marlins

JC Ramirez is new to this. He doesn’t quite know what to do yet. Like a college freshman learning three weeks into the fall semester that no one voluntarily chooses a Friday class, the Angels’ Ramirez is learning the ways of a starting pitcher.

In his first eight starts, Ramirez had been warming...

  • Road to success never ventured far from home for Galaxy's Gyasi Zardes

The high points of Gyasi Zardes’ life have been confined to a narrow sliver of land between Carson and Redondo Beach.

At one end, Zardes bought his first house and started a family. At the other he made his Major League Soccer debut with the Galaxy, made his first start for the U.S. national team...

  • Josef Newgarden hoping the move to Team Penske can bring an Indy 500 win

There are three things to note up front when it comes to IndyCar racer Josef Newgarden:

No, he’s not a foreign driver; he was born and reared in Tennessee and the spelling of his first name stems from his Danish mother.

Yes, he grew up in NASCAR country but always was more drawn to sleek Indy-style...
